The place Marano Lagunare is today a quiet small town and fishing port in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region not far from Grado with 1782 inhabitants (as of 2022).
However, it was created as early as 81 BC. as a legion city of the Roman Empire. Today nothing can be seen of the former fortress walls of Marano. These were still available at the end of the 19th century. The Venetian language is still spoken in the city, although the province of Udine is Friulian-speaking.
The center of Marano is the square called "Granda", which is marked by the "1000-year-old tower".
